Delhi: Waste to energy to waste

Shakuntala quickly runs towards Tajpur Pahari when she sees a truck arriving with fresh ash. She lives a few hundred metres away from the spot where tonnes of ash generated by the Okhla waste-to-energy plant is sent — and callously dumped in the open. The place where the ash, the remnants of the incineration of garbage, has been dumped and tamped down over time looks like any other ground. But a closer look at the children playing cricket there reveals the darker under layer is not soil at all, but packed ash.
