Pay widow Rs 9cr, consumer panel tells insurance co that rejected Rs 5cr claim

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered an insurance company to pay a woman in Mumbai Rs 5 crore ($684,000) after it wrongfully rejected her deceased husband's life insurance claim. The company, Birla Sun Life Insurance, had cited incorrect date of birth and failure to provide medical history and past claim rejections as reasons for the rejection. The commission deemed the rejection letter illegal and ordered the payment, along with an additional Rs 4 crore ($547,200) in interest.
